St. Anthony was born at about 251, in a coma in Middle Egypt, the son of wealthy Christian farmers. When he was twenty years old, his parents died. In the church he heard the word of the Bible: "If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven;! and come, follow me "After he had given away his possessions and his younger sister in the care of a community where sacred virgins, he withdrew into solitude. During his long stays desert Anthony was repeatedly plagued by haunting visions. The devil he allegedly appeared in various forms in order to divert him from his ascetic and religious life. When he was dying, two lions lay next to him and he dug a grave. As she sniffed his hand one last time, blessed the saints. Anthony is the patron saint of domestic animals, especially of cattle.
